How To Start Your Fitness Journey

So you made the decision to start working out and living a more active lifestyle, way to go! But where do you even begin? Well here are some tips to get you started on your fitness journey.

  • Commit to Change/ Hype Yourself up

When starting out you need to be honest with yourself, this thing isn’t going to be easy, it’s going to take a lot of determination and will power. You will get sore and not feel like continuing, and there will be days you don’t feel like heading to the gym or wherever. But you need to make the commitment to yourself right now to continue no matter what, remember your why, why are you doing this in the first place? It should be very personal and elicit an emotional reaction when you think of your why. To help ingrain your why into your head to keep you motivated think about creating a goal board. Include images and quotes that tell you why you started and where you want to be so you can refer to it during your less motivated times.

  • Start Small

We all wish we could just snap our fingers and have the perfect body, but lets be real that isn’t realistic at all! But jumping into a brutal workout way beyond your skill level will only result in a body so sore you realize parts that you never knew existed before and ultimately give up. So let’s not start that way, instead ease into it. Start with body weight exercises you can do at home like jumping jacks, squats and crunches for 20min in the morning. The goal is to sustain and make this a new habit and that will never happen if you burn out before you even begin.

  • Find What You Like

There is no one right way to exercise and in fact there are so many different activities you can try. There are at home exercises with and without weight, cardio, strength, kickboxing, swimming, yoga, to name a few. There are also so many different variations of each of these things, goat yoga anyone? So try it all and only do the things you enjoy. There is no formula for things you have to do as long as you are active and enjoying yourself that’s all that matters.

  • Don’t Worry About the Scale

So often people start exercising to lose weight, and don’t get me wrong that’s a great thing but it shouldn’t be your main focus. Instead focus on things you can see like better mobility, greater stamina and fitting into those cute pair of pants you always wanted. Because weight can be tricky since you know that whole muscle ways more than fat thing, it’s not a great determining factor of your overall health.

  • Be Consistent

Living an active lifestyle isn’t about losing some weight and getting into old habits, it’s about creating whole new habits and therefore a whole new life. The accomplish this you need to consistently show up each and everyday. Start out with a commitment of 2-3 days of exercise a week for 20min. It doesn’t matter how small the activity may seem, like a nightly walk, the point is to be able to consistently do it and eventually increase the level of activity and the difficulty.

  • Have Fun

At this end of the day we want to enjoy the things we do in life, exercise is no different. Find something you have fun doing and get rid of the things that don’t bring you joy.
