We all know that food is a vital source to our existence. But did you know that food can affect your mood? Here are 9 top mood boosting foods.


Bananas contain the amino acid tryptophan as well as vitamin A, B6, and C, fiber, potassium, phosphorus, iron and carbohydrate. Mood-boosting carbohydrates aid in the absorptiion of tryptophan in the brain, while vitamin B6 helps convert the tryptophan into the mood-lifting hormone serotonin.


Avocados contain both monounsaturated fats and folate. THey help lower the risk of depression due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show an association between folate deficiency and depressive symptoms.


Berries are high in antioxidants and vitamin C, which helps cope with cortisol a hormone that is released during times of stress.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate contains polyphenols. A small square of dark chocolate causes the brain to release endorphins and boost serotonin levels.

Brazil nuts are one of the best sources of the mineral selenium, (an essential mineral for proper body functioning) and studies have shown that people who are low in it have increased depression, irritability, anxiety and fatigue.


Salmon Contains omega 3 fatty acids. People who are deficient in omega 3 fatty acids may be susceptible to depression and low mood, according to research. Fatty acids also make up a large percent of our brain tissue.


Spinach has an extremely high nutritional value and is rich in antioxidants. It contains vitamins B3, B6 and B12. Eating leafy green vegetables, such as spinach or even broccoli, will help keep your energy levels up
